Kidum in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Shocked yet? Kidum was in Winnipeg and his performances were just simply electrifying, especially to - it goes without saying - the girls. He did most of his Burundais music and just a few in Kiswahili. The Kenyans in the audience were a little left out but Kidum is always worth listening to. Just like Madilu System, Tabuley Rochereau and Franco and TPOk Jazz... we still (Kenyans) listen to their music today even though we barely understand what they are saying. But are we crazy? No! Of course not. These giys just have amazing music... sweet to listen to.

I managed to get a few moments on my phone just so I can share something with you, my audience. This is probably my first bit of real life journalistic work.
The quality of the videos and photos may be a little poor but even with a high end phone, this is what I could capture.
Enjoy!

TUSKER PROJECT FAME CATCHES UP WITH TECHNOLOGY:

For the first time in history, this year’s Tusker Project Fame 5 saw a sponsorship deal signed between EABL and Samsung Electronics East Africa that propelled TPF 5 to a digital space.
The multi million collaboration saw Samsung transform TPF 5 to a paperless reality TV production with a custom- made Samsung application (the TPF app) for both the production teams and the viewers.
This sponsorship saw full digital interaction using solutions such as Samsung Galaxy Tablets and Smart TVs with touch screen capabilities.
As part of the show’s interactive feature, TPF 5 faculty, students and judges were all awarded with Galaxy Tabs, Galaxy Pocket phones, allowing them to communicate, tweet, Facebook, receive instructions and share response real tome, minimizing the use of paper scripts.
During this year’s TPF 5, the Faculty team shared and delivered their class assignments and related instructions via Galaxy Tabs. The judges too delivered their verdicts via Galaxy Tablets, apparently for an easy audit framework.
The production team was not left behind too, as they also communicated and updated the presenter scripts real time through the presenters’ Galaxy Tabs. Talk about technology catching up with East Africa’s biggest show!

West Africa's Project Fame!!

Now believe it or not, the West Africans have their own 'Project Fame'! And here is the web page: http://projectfamewestafrica.com/

Get in there, watch the videos and the performances and then let us know what you think, can they beat our very own Tusker Project Fame?!!

Before I started on this blog, I was checking on the patent issues currently plaguing the mobile phone industry (yes I said plaguing and I know some people will be against that but, I said it!) and I started thinking, supposed we patented the 'project fame' name as ours, that is Tusker's of EA's for that matter, we'd stand to win some money here!

And this is a heads up for my very creative East Africans, next time you design something or have an idea, patent it!!!!

Well, get on the West African PF page and leave your comments here While you are at it, have a patented day hahahaha!!!

RUTH MATETE WINNER OF T.P.F 5; WHAT YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT HER SOCIAL LIFE…

CHILDHOOD: my parents separated after they had me. I first stayed with my mother in Kakamega and moved to Nairobi when I was 8 years old. My mum became sickly and so she sent me to Nairobi to stay with my dad. Sadly, she later passed on. Since then, it has been my dad and i.
ADJUSTING TO CITY LIFE: when I arrived in Nairobi, I could only speak Luhya because I had not been to school. It was challenging to learn and speak good Swahili and English but my dad was supportive.
SCHOOLING: I went to Dr Krapf and Uhuru Primary School. Afterwards I went to Maasai Girls and St Paul’s Erusui for High School. I joined Daystar University in 2005 to study communication and I am graduating come 2013, which is next year.
RUTH AFTER WINNING SH.5 MILLION AND THE RECORD DEAL: Life has changed. People recognize me everywhere I go and many doors are opening. I thought my dream of being an artiste was very far, but is now within my reach. I also have a body guard, but only for one year (laughs).
YOU ONCE COMMENTED ON HOW HOT STEVE OF TPF 4 WAS. ARE YOU DATING: Not currently.
WHAT QUALITIES DOES RUTH FIND ATTRACTIVE IN A MAN: I love a man who smells good, is a good listener and appreciates music.
WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT RUTH: I have a phobia for heights, but I love wearing heels. I wear them everywhere. I am very cheeky. I once had a crush on Ken Ambani. I love red because I love attention. I am very daring and love to take risks.
PARTING SHOT: do not be afraid of what people say. You cannot please everyone and not everyone has your best interest at heart. Know what advice to take in and what to ignore.

The Big Thing presently in Kenyan TV's

Everybody probably already guessed it right, the Olympic games! But Kenya is not doing fine, not even in the event we are best known for! I mean we've got Boxing and Swimming which is a good addition to the fields we were already conquering. Now I cannot safely bet even my hard earned $20 that a Kenyan will win  in the 1500m or 3000m race! Hell no! Judging from what I have seen, no!

But why are we doing so poorly? I have no idea? I have some suggestions and observations though! When Maiyo flopped on the hurdles and fell to the ground, no one was there to give her some moral support, not even a single team mate from Kenya! We cannot fully set the blame on her table for such accidents (or misfortunes), but surely, a coach should at least be there to encourage her, or a team mate for love's sake! We see other Olympians living and even thriving on encouragements from team mates and coaches... take the example of the Canadian Heptathlete whose coach had the encourage her to just finish the race, or the american sprinter who had to be helped through the race by his Dad. Are we Kenyans running out of love, compassion and dedication?

Why do we look like we don't know that this is the Olympics we are at? Some of our athletes are just too casual!!! If Rugby 7s was in the Olympics, we would have a shot at a bunch of medals: gold, silver or bronze!

Let's not even go there because we saw what happened in the HBC world series... same thing here too: Kenyans just lack in dedication, discipline and the seriousness to compete in the world stage! It's getting too hard out there for our casual bunch.

Now let the comments flow!

The Penultimate Show

This is the show that precedes the last show of this year's TPF 5!!!

The competition is coming tho assign end fellows and what a close game it is! The performances proud the night were truly superb but of course there has to be one that comes up below or under par, sadly.

The contestants put up s show to remember. Personally, I think Jackson's performance was the highlight of TPF 5. performing 'si je savais' by Madilu System, Jackson put on a spectacular rendition that would have thrown the other contestants out of rhythm.

If you watched the show live, am pretty sure you have also have Ruth and Jackson as three two most possible winners of this 5th season of TPF. Ruth's performance was nothing short of breathtakingly fantastic. And out was a perfect way to end the night. She, over the weeks in the academy, has shown that she it's very able and that confidence is her middle name.

Steve and Eunice had quite a night to remember too and the judges recognized that.

Joe however was not as lucky ad Tyne others. Lucky for him though, your votes can give him a breath of life.

Videos for the 7th Nomination Show

Here are the videos for the 7th nomination show:

Video 1
Video 2
Video 3
Video 4

I hope you enjoy these videos thought they are a little out of date!

July 21st Eviction Night

Now these were pretty much the best performances by the contestants who were facing elimination and a quite disappointing journey home. But whoever had to go home should be proud of what they have achieved so far.

Among those performing were Ruth, Steve, Sharon and Joe. For any other person watching from home, the choice between who to save and who to banish would be a hard one to make. Ruth had to be safe, whether by the fans votes or by judges hammer - her performance was outstanding! The poll that I conducted on this Blog showed the same result with 57% of the people voting to save Ruth.

Joe and Steve had amazing performances too, not to say that Sharon's wasn't. As you may have seen, Sharon has been evicted and her exit performance moved the crowed and tears were shed!

Unfortunately though, for most of us in the diaspora, missing the live show means waiting for days or even weeks to finally watch the videos!

Performances of July 15th

In case you did not know, the performances today were a real test to see who was meant for music, it put the competitor's composition skills to test, after all this is what a musician does. So the contestants composed their own original music and took them to stage and in front of the judges.

In my opinion, they all did a great job, but for the judges and I hope you guys agree, Jackson and Doreen seemed to have done better than the rest. That being said, you can almost guess who are in probation: Ruth, Steve, Joe and Sharon.

Can you believe it, for the first time ever, Ruth is in probation!!! Quick, to your phones and let's save her.

Unfortunately, for my readers, finding the highlight videos is almost an impossible task... and all I can do is wait until TuskerLager.com posts some. For now though, lets tweet, google+, facebook and do everything you can to ask #tuskerlager and #tpf5 to post videos faster!

July 14th Eviction Night!

So those who were in probation: Nancy, Steve, Sharon and Joe performed and one had to be evicted. Even though the poll on this blog showed a lot of promise in Nancy, she has been evicted! Unfortunately, I haven't got my hands on the videos yet but they should be up soon.

Tuskerlager tweeted Nancy's last words as she left TPF and this is what she had to say:

'It's not the end of the road, it's the beginning of the highway' those are Nancy's last words as she leaves Tusker Project Fame

Best wishes Nancy!

Don't miss tomorrow's show because it will have the contestants performing own composed songs!!

Until then, keep your head up.

Peace!

Did you notice it? Ruth breaks the record!

Ruth has never been to probation, and that right there is a record! No other contestant has been able to survive all the way to the own composed weekend without once being on probation! Congratulations Ruth.

Here's an article by Kevin Oyugi of Ghafla.co.ke.
Ruth Breaks Record

I honestly believe that Ruth stands a really big chance to win it all! Do you agree?

4th Eviction night performances - Samantha leaves

Video 1
The contestants just looked awesome! Talk about transformation. Samantha did look fantastic and if you haven't seen the videos or missed the whole show, you are in for some comedy! Samantha looked so terrified of the G4S dudes. Plus, take a look at what happened at Samba.

Video 2
Eviction loomed for all the contestants and it came down to the wire for Nancy and Samantha and Sadly Samantha had to leave the Academy....  A little sad and disappointing but I think the Faculty made a great choice with Nancy.

This is your blog guys so air you comments and reactions!

There's a poll, let's see what you think about the decision to evict Samantha.

Ruth Matete - Can She Win TPF5?

The Daily Nation interviewed Ruth Matete and I must admit she has a nice story about how it all started.

You can read the interview from the Daily Nation online edition here. Do you think she has a chance to win the whole thing? I think she does - she's got such a unique and powerful voice and above all she is very confident and solid on stage.

Her awesomeness doesn't just end here, another article form Uganda Picks also shows that Ruth is poised to win this year - everyone knows she's got something unique.
Read the article

Share your thoughts and predictions for the TPF competitions in the comment box below and meanwhile take the vote!

Do you think she can win?

Performances on July 8th.

I hope you did not have to wait too long but here are some videos from the performances of the 8th of July:

Tonight TPF had some amazing performances and good shockers.... For the first time ever, Doreen is not on probation!! Is it because she was good in her performance? Certainly this time one could hear her words. But she may have been safe because some performers were just not up to task.

Jackson was a real shocker and he had an amazing performance that ensured that those who came after him had a hard time living up to his first grade performance! He did a reggae song with a twist of country music in it, now how good is that.

Now the other thing is that  Nancy is on probation the second time over, and Joe is on probation, surely I did not expect that. Ruth did an awesome song and an electrifying performance - fantastic.

Probates:
Nancy
Joe
Sharon
Steve

I think that this time around, the judges had an easy time determining who goes on probation... but now who do we save?

Vote result update:
The first vote I put up was asking who among the two South Sudan contestants would go the furthest and Nancy won with a huge margin - clearly.

I am putting up a vote to decide who to save from probation among the above 4 probates - get voting!!

Next show, you can catch all the action  here.

3rd Nomination Night Performances

With this year's theme, I would say these performances lived up to expectation especially considering the fact that this was pretty much the third time the contestants performed on stage coupling choreography and singing. As Jackson said, the challenge was keeping the singing and the dancing in a perfect balance!

The theme of this TPF 5 is "Showtime"! Great theme I would say, because it means that we as the audience are in for a energetic and entertaining treat.

If you did not watch them perform, here are the links:

Nancy came out strong and I have to admit that I love her choice of songs, she did an awesome job with that song. Now before I spoil the excitement, go ahead and watch the performances and leave your comments below.

You can catch live TV here

Just in case you were wondering, these are the songs that were performed by the contestants. They had great song choices, most of them classical, and for most of them that worked out well because it did not get them into probation. These were live at the Tusker Dome in Nairobi.

Nancy - Yeke Yeke by Mory Kante.
Nancy is just electrifying, so much confidence and self belief you can see it on her forehead!! She's something.

Joe - Fresh by Cool and the Gang.
Some how Joe always chooses these kind of songs , I think it is because he has the looks for the songs and that makes his performances seem so natural.

Ruth Matete - Anytime You Need a Friend by Mariah Carey.
She did a great job with the song and the crowd was bringing down the roof, they must really like her!

Sharon - Ndihamba Nawe by Mafikizolo.
She made it as natural as she could and it was a great performance

Jackson - Moyibi by Pepe Kale.
As Sheila said, it is hard to believe that he was struggling with dancing and singing at the same time.

Eunice - Love Me by Tiwa Savage.
Juliana wasn't impressed by this performance especially with the vocals. She has had better performances previously and things are not looking as good for her. Get texting if you want to save her!

Steve - Sina Makosa by Les Wanyika.
His performance was just fine, nothing really captivating.

Allan - E no Easy - P square featuring J. Martins.
Personally, I don't think the performance was as electrifying... That song has so much more potential and with a theme like Showtime, this song would give you some highlight reel... He had to do much better than that I believe. As Juliana said, he needs to add some twist to his performances. Gerrard nailed it with his comment that this song is a powerhouse, with African rhythm.

Samantha - Nadina by Mbilia Bel.
Now for those who did not understand what Juliana was talking about a twist to songs, this is an epitome of it. Take the song and sing it like it was your own. She owned it!

Doreen - I'll be Your Babe Tonight by Whitney Houston.
And she does it again, she chooses a song by Whitney Houston, I think she does so because she believes that she has the voice to match Whitney's. Somehow she's always having some trouble with the judges and from Ian's comments, I think she's just not audible enough. She however did a great job.

Apart from the contestants' performances, there was Jackie Chandiru from Uganda performing Gold Digger, awesome performance and also a good word of advice to the contestants. Thanks Jackie.

Performances, Evictions and Probation

Well, so last weekend had some TPF fun to offer - call it good entertainment if you may. These guys already look like they were born stars. It's a great transformation that they have undergone in the past few weeks. I have included links to the performances and I won't include a lot of literature here (I am counting on you guys to leave comments, observations and thoughts on these performances and the outcomes.

Get controversial and let's enjoy this TPF while it lasts.

P.S: I realized that I hadn't left the comment section available to 'anyone' - anonymous users in other words - so now you don't need to sign in in order to post a comment so post them up and shout out loud!!

Gala Night 1

The Gala night had a great start! Awesome dancing, reminding me of high school music festivals! Once again the MCs are Sheila Mwanyigah and the ever entertaining Mich Egwang! The judges also have a 'green back', if I may say so because it's his first time to judge in TPF, am talking about judge Gerrard. I am sure he's experienced enough! The other judges you already know: Ian, Hermes, Juliana and of course the new G.

Mich seems to have stirred some drama already! Off to the introductions where contestants were introduced as per their nationality. I liked the song that Southern Sudan had for their introduction - simply awesome. Kenya had a pretty song too which reminded me of Tausi, remember that show? So Joe thinks that Kenyans are fast in everything they do! Thanks for the complement Joe but we still have a lot to work on.

The Academy looks great, the band is amazing - awesome place to be and the Faculty is such an endowed one:
Principal - Hellen
Music Director - R. Kay
Voice Coach - Kavutha
Choreographer - Edu

Brian Luzinda from Uganda performing Ne Yo's So Sick. Tough song perhaps? Hermes, believes that it was a great choice of a song but not the best performance, Ian as usual was straight to the point and surgically so - Brian did not do his best according to Ian. But considering the fact that he hasn't been before a crowd before.

      Catch the performances here

Doreen Muchiri performing Gabrielle's mammoth hit, Rise. She seems to know how to choose songs for herself. Props from Hermes, Gerrard, Juliana and Ian! Doreen's future in the academy looks promising - can she maybe win it for Kenya?

Linius performed a song called Simon Mbagala, did a great job. At least that's what I thought, until I reconsidered his vocals. The beautiful Diana Teta performed the huge song by Vanessa Williams - save the best for last... I really don't know what to say because I think she shows a lot a lot of promise, she wasn't very energetic with the performance though.

     Watch their performances here

Nancy Bol, from S. Sudan did such an awesome song, shocking the crowd with Iwasado... She is something! Such a  humble girl (getting a little emotional here lol). Amazing performance from Nancy - best wishes. Joe from Burundi did Lionel Richie and the Comodores - Easy, another classic and he didn't seem to have disappointed the judges either. Good luck Joe.

      Watch their performances here

Sent Home
We already have some people who've been shown the door though and these are:
- Linius
- Brian
- Diana

So sad to watch them go, but oh well.. you can always get another chance. Good luck guys, and do not be discouraged.

TPF Top 25

25 aspirants, 7 to go home and 18 to live on to sing another day! Wow what a test they had with only one chance, one song and one song only. I mean there are lots of variables to consider; the song has to be right, of the right key, voice projection has to be perfect and so on. These things can only be achieved if one is a natural performer - a true test of talent perhaps?

So here are the guys we'll see more of:
Steve Homes - Kenya
Mer Ayang - South Sudan
Pacifique Gashuri - Burundi
Jackson Kalimba - Rwanda
Sharon Nalwoga - Uganda
Allan Sekiranda - Uganda
Samantha Nzeyimana - Burundi
Fatuma Muhoza - Rwanda
Imani Cyprian - Tanzania
Eunice Gutu - Kenya
Ruth Matete - Kenya
Damian Mihayo - Tanzania

There are 6 contestants on probation, that means that they will be performing in the Gala night. This will be a great opportunity to actually see who is more of a performer than the other. Here are the contestants on probation:
Diana Teta - Rwanda
Joe Irankunda - Burundi
Doreen Muchiri - Kenya
Linias Mahaya - Tanzania
Nancy Bol - South Sudan
Brian Luzinda - Uganda

Doreen especially has been twice lucky so am looking forward to see what kind of performance she'll put up in the opening gala. Judge Ian seems to see some great potential in Samantha, good thing?

Who do you think presents the most potential so far?

Kenya; Nairobi and Kisumu.

Well, to start off, sorry for taking my time with this one! But back to business, I really don't know what to say about Nairobi and Kisumu all together so I am going to just highlight some funny moments and some controversies, that will be all for this blog, my apologies.

As for Nairobi, I had been waiting to be amazed by talented 'near future' stars from the home of Tusker Project fame but I have to admit I was barely impressed. But hey, on the flip side, there were a few really good contestants who gave there best. Kudos to the judges, great job this time around.
Linda! Big intro but your mascara (is that what they call it? the eye pencil stuff?) kind of scared me, I don't know about you guys. If I was a judge, it follows that the make up would in a way change a yes to a NO! For all the politicians out there, call me a conservative... lol.

Off to Kisumu! Before I start talking about the ever interesting Kisumu, how come there were no auditions in Eldoret? Or did I miss it? Kisumu was awesome, great performances and for the first time, at least in my case, I have seen the judges reconsider someone's performance - awesome! Or was there another instance they reconsidered someone? You can watch the highlights and intros through these links:

Nairobi Auditions - Part 1, youtube video.
Nairobi Auditions - Part 2, youtube video
Nairobi Auditions - Part 3, youtube video

Comedy and Laughable Moments!
There was this Micheal Jackson guy - he should get some kind of award, am not sure under what category but he tried man! He had some determination, come on guys... be with me on this one. Then there's this guy called Kibet, I won't give comments on my own because I did find a really funny comment on YouTube (am not plagiarizing, just saying that this was said by someone!!). Here's how that comment read: That kibet...lol..hata kama ni ukale.... ".. A campler(gambler)..." lol. Kenny Rodgers will sue u for murdering his song!. Hahahahah is all I can say to that! Here is another YouTube comment that brought tears to my eyes! Not that I was sad, and not tears of joy either - just that I laughed hard enough to shed tears: "Lindarrrrr just keep staying out of the country."

Controversial Moments
Irene! Now here is where my agreement with the judges got a little sore. How about you guys? Surely they should reconsider Irene just as they did reconsider the other guy in Kisumu. Yet another comment from YouTube: "surely, Irene has it all, i dont get y she was rejected, chic ebu go try out for idols or xfactor, m sure simon would say yes. you have it, these guys r way too unfair".  But oh well! According to me, Irene was great and she will indeed find another way to fame if she decides to!

To conclude this, do you think we (Kenyans especially) are becoming too American? Or too Western perhaps? I mean, I look at Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi etc and I can clearly make an identity specific to them, do we have one original one? Food for thought.

Look out for a new post on the top 25,

Peace!

Kenya (Meru, Nakuru), Rwanda and Burundi

We all remember Alpha, a very energetic, kind and loving personality who won TPF 3, from Rwanda so we all know what to expect from Rwanda. Apart from great talent, it always has beautiful ladies who already have a starry look, or is that just me?

Well, Diana Tete go the first yes for a really great start. Nina Fatuma, with Lauryn Hill and the Fugees' Killing me Softly was also great and after a few performances I was wondering what happened to the guys in Rwanda, a few other yeses were recorded in Kigali and Rwanda has a good number, congratulations.

The Tusker Project Fame is expanding and for the first time ever, Burundi is participating! I like that. And to keep the standards or rather, set them, Ian Mbugua was the judge. You might know Burundi through the famous Kidum. The first ever yes for Burundi was through Pacifique who gave a really great performance that would pass for a yes from any judge! Gabriel got a yes though half heartedly from Ian who for the whole time showed that Burundi did not really impress him. Could it be because Pacifique set a higher standard for all that came after him? Samantha came out really strong and probably changed Ian's thoughts, that is a hard thing to do but Samantha had done it. Marcel provided some comedy representing the older folk. Good luck to all the pioneers from Burundi, well done.

Off to Meru, Kenya... this was a really great step for TPF going to other places in the country apart from the bigger cities. And sure enough, with the success of Faith, Angela and Elizabeth, Meru shows some promise. At Nakuru, Joel provided the occasional, much needed comedy with his "Are you laughing because am good or...." But he knows that he's got a talent, he can be an entertainer. Edwin did not make it but went on to Mombasa to audition once again. Nakuru did not start off at a good note but it caught up with a couple of yeses.

Arusha, Dar and Mombasa Auditions

It is always an exciting time to watch auditions, especially in Tanzania where the big part of choirs we listened to as children came from - remember Shangilieni Church Choir and so on? These auditions had some really great talent and of course some were flat out boring and really comic - but that is the fun.

Dar had some good moments, some contestants deserved what they got, especially the guy who brought in a guitar, that was great. Arusha however had Ian Mbugua, well known for being painfully honest, good thing for the competition you think? He even went outside to give the waiting hopefuls to deliver the news that the judges did not want to waste their time.

Mombasa was awesome, the first yes for Mombasa did a great African song and she was really great at it - her dressing and hairstyle might have played a substantially great part in the YES that she received. But persistence really can ensure that you get somewhere. Think of Edwin for instance who tried out  the auditions in Nakuru and then went on the Mombasa auditions! And you might have already guessed that he did get a chance - well he did. So there you go, persistence. Remember the guy from Dar who had tried it in 2010 and Msechu beat him to the academy, his time finally came. I love it when the contestants choose to perform local music and succeed, as in the case of Collins and Makasi. As expected, some comedy here too with Ishmail Salim who did not sing at all, and almost rapped but this is a singing competition!
